 Dear Parents,

 

The Yellow Room Friends explored fire safety in relation to Lag B’Omer. They learned about the bonfires people make on Lag B’Omer to remember the great light of Torah that Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai brought into our world. They so enjoyed the Lag B’Omer ‘Parade’ as they waved their flags and marched along. Before creating a bonfire art and a bonfire flag they discussed their thoughts about fire and fire safety:

What’s the difference between hot and cold?

Naveed: Fire usually comes from gas just like water. Fire and water come from gas. It’s kind of like the same thing.

Shyli: The hotter is hot and colder is cold. If you put them together you get warm. Cold is ice. Hot is burn. North Pole is snow and Arizona is hot. So if they put them together we get warm.

Leanna: Water melts fire and fire melts ice. That’s the difference. I know which one melts faster: the ice. The fire melts slow.

Mae: Cold is ice and hot is fire.

What’s the difference be hot and warm?

Mae: Warm is a little more cold than hot.

Naveed: Warm is pretty kind of colder than hot.

Leanna: They don’t feel the same temperature so warm is just a light type of feeling of warm and the hot is a hard feeling of the sun.

Shyli: Hot and warm. Warm is if there’s a little bit ice. But fire is hotter than warm.

What’s the difference between cold and cool?

Naveed: Cool is a little bit more warm and cold is freezing.

Mae:  Cold is freezing and cool is like a rainbow. Rainbows are cool.

Shyli: Cooling down is cooler than icy.

Why do we have to be careful around hot things?

Leanna: If there’s a fire in your house you have to stay away so you don’t have to go to the hospital and they will cut your skin because if you get burnt from fire that would be bad.

Mae: Because it burns you.

Naveed: If you touch it your skin will get peeled off and you’ll have to go to the hospital to peel off all the skin and then glue it back in.

Shyli: Because they’re too dangerous. But I never got burned by a fire.

What is a burn?

Leanna: When you see a fire and you touch it. It hurts and gets swelled up.

Shyli: If we wipe it off you will see red.

Mae: When you get salt in your eyes. Gas stoves have fire but only pots and pans go on it to get heated up.

Naveed: The burn that you get you will peel it all off and you have to glue it back on.

Loose Parts + Lag B’Omer

After reading a book about fire safety, the Friends created bonfires utilizing loose parts (see CJP Facebook page) and 3D art.

Kriyah + Gematria

Alef Beis letter is equal to a number (Alef = 1, Beis = 2, etc.). This is called Gematria. The Yellow Room Friends had great fun breaking the code of their friends’ names figuring out the corresponding Alef Beis letter to the number value.

Graduation

The Kindergarten Friends are SO excited for their graduation next week. They each have a speaking part they need to practice at home. Each child’s part has been sent home in their backpack and on Procare. For graduation your child’s hair needs to accommodate a graduation cap so please only send low ponies at the nape of the neck if you choose to pull their hair back. We can’t wait to share the nachas with you at Graduation on Thursday, May 26 at 9:30 am.

Dear Families, 

Parsha, Yarn and a Second Chance

This week the Yellow Room explored the idea of second chances. This Sunday is Pesach Sheni, literally the ‘Second Pesach’. That’s because the Jewish people who weren’t able to bring a korban-present to Hashem asked for a second chance. And Hashem gave it to them. A month later, on the 14^th of Iyar, a month after Pesach, the people who missed their chance were able to bring a korban-present. The Yellow Room Friends remembered that the korban Pesach was a sheep which is why they created their own Pesach Sheni sheep this week. Coordinating the wool and winding it around their hands or boxes was challenging but with persistence they did it. Then they cut the loops, added the sheep’s face and feet.

 

Torah + Art

The Yellow Room is preparing for their graduation. They have been rehearsing their songs and preparing some presentations as well. This week they began working on their Torahs. They took their Mitzva notes which they had saved over the year and connected them in long scrolls to create their own Torah. They will complete them next week so they can use them at the Graduation.

 

Sefira + Math

Counting the days till Shavuos is something the Kindergarten does every day. Each day they slide another bead onto another day as they count Sefiras Haomer. Utilizing the Sefiras Haomer marble maze, they graphed the speed at which they could get the marble through the sefirah maze, all the way to day 49, after which the marble reaches the Torah. The results amazed the contestants:

 

Jacob : 8 seconds

Shyli: 10 seconds

Morah: 11 seconds

Ronan: 15 seconds

Leanna: 20 seconds

This week in the Yellow Room the children have been practicing what they have learned all year while finding ways to appreciate Mom.  The children have been figuring out what a mom is, what their mom means to them, what they enjoy doing with mom best and so much more. This has been a special time for the children to practice their writing, their math, and their problem solving while thinking about someone else: Mom!   

The children are at the age where they are less egocentric, and your children are really exploring what is important to others and how others feel in response to their actions or communications (verbal and nonverbal).

When the children were asked what makes Mommy special, they all said that she is kind.  So we changed the question to, “What makes you know Mommy is kind?”  This is what they said:

Jacob: When we sometimes have trouble finding words she can just help us.

Leah: She loves us a lot.  She shows us by kissing us.

Leanna: When we have booboos and we are upset she gives it a kiss and we feel better.  And, sometimes I am mad and she helps me feel better.  She also shows us because she wakes us up (daily).

Naveed:  She lets me do whatever I want, but not dangerous stuff.

Ronan: She hugs me and kisses me.  She shows me she is kind by playing with me and being nice to me.

Shyli:  When you have a booboo she can put a band aid on it or fix it.When I get tired, or something, she puts me to sleep.

Dear Parents,

 

Kriyah

The Yellow Room investigated same sounding letters in the Alef Beis. They discovered many letters have friends such the Veis ב  and the Vov  ו  which don’t look the same but have the same sound.

There are many Ivrit (Hebrew) words that the children have posted around the room, for example שטיח  (shatiach) which is the carpet where the Kindergarten Friends gather and play, עט (et) which is the pen that Morah uses for Kriyah practice and  עפרון (iparon) which is the pencil the Friends use to write with, to name a few.

The Kindergarten Friends explored the Aseres Hadibros, the Ten Commandments, in preparation for Shavuos. One they focused on this week was the fifth commandment, Honor your Father and Mother, since Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend:

Jacob: You can help your mother make dinner.

Leanna: We can help cook.

Leah: You can make breakfast for them.

Sefira

The Yellow Room created their own Sefira Counters threading pipe cleaners in a pattern. This week created the Yellow Room friends created a giant Sefira counter for the classroom. They chose a ribbon and threaded the pool noodle rings and then numbered them to 49. They use it every day to count the days till Shavuos, when we once again receive the Torah.

Parsha

This week’s Parsha teaches us how Hashem wants us to behave in kodosh (holy) ways. A kodosh way of conducting business is to be honest and ensure the scales are accurate. The Yellow Room explored weights and scales and created a scale which hangs in the classroom. Mae and Shyli weighed some drink bottles to see who’s was heavier and who’s was lighter.
